Expanding sustainable transport in Izmir

Sector: Other

MDB/DFI Counterpart: EBRD

The Buca Metro line is a major urban transport project in Izmir, Türkiye’s third-largest city, designed to address the challenges of rapid urbanisation, including increased motorisation, associated noise and air pollution impacts and high levels of traffic congestion.

ILX participated in financing to support the construction of the metro line alongside EBRD, enabling a shift away from high-carbon transport modes such as private cars and minibuses. The Izmir Metro project will result in safer and more reliable transport services for 350,000 passengers per day, while simultaneously reducing traffic congestion, noise and air pollution. The modal shift is expected to decrease emissions by around 19,671 tCO2e, 76.8 tNOx and 1.21 tPM per year, starting in 2026, resulting in a 46% reduction in GHG emissions compared to current conditions, all in all supporting the development of a more sustainable and liveable urban environment in Izmir.
