Driving inclusive tourism-led development in the Dominican Republic

Tropicalia is a sustainable mixed-use resort in development in the Miches region of the Dominican Republic, an area with significant development needs and limited historical access to tourism-driven economic opportunities.

ILX participated in financing to support the development of Tropicalia alongside IDB Invest, enabling the project to generate over 2,000 jobs and around 400 permanent roles during operations. The financing also supports the creation of a strong local supply chain, with up to 70% of goods and services sourced domestically and a significant share coming from local MSMEs, contributing to the region’s prosperity. In a region where poverty levels are high, with estimates suggesting that ~70% of the inhabitants live under the poverty line, the project plays a key role in driving inclusive economic development. Beyond its economic impact, the project incorporates resource-efficient and climate-resilient design, including energy savings, renewable energy solutions, and water and waste management systems.
